Who is Joshua Johnston?
I am a traditional and stop motion animator, and an art historian. Through my work, I hope to revitalize classic animation artforms and return them to the mainstream alongside the CGI animation that is so popular today. My work is heavily inspired by Laika Studios and Cartoon Saloon and similarly to those studios, my animation seeks to borrow inspiration from history and folklore in order to tell powerful and beautiful stories. The majority of my work is done via traditional animation methods in order to further immerse the viewer in its history. I use traditional 2D animation to call back to classic eras in animation history such as UPA, rotoscoping, Disney renaissance animation, and rubber hose. I also use stop motion to call back to early Claymation films or pre-CGI era practical effects.
